Your oral care routine just might be the key to a longer and healthier life. This week on Aging Less: The Longevity Science Insights Podcast, host Sarah Stancombe interviews oral health expert Prof. Dileep Sharma, Ph.D., FPFA, FICD to discover why this is and practical tips for managing our oral hygiene.
The Head of Discipline for Oral Health at the University of Newcastle, professor Dileep Sharma has nearly 20 years of experience as a health professional and clinical educator across multiple continents. Impressively, he is a leading voice in the field of periodontics and dental research. His extensive work spans over 80 peer-reviewed publications, award-winning research in sustainable dental materials, and leadership in international dental organizations.
In this episode, Prof. Dileep Sharma, Ph.D., FPFA, FICD shares how a simple dental hygiene routine and regular dentist visits makes all the difference — preventing oral cancer, gum disease and systemic diseases. He also gives an important reminder that oral hygiene extends beyond the teeth, and that other parts of the mouth are also important to maintaining oral health.
Together, Sarah and Prof. Dileep Sharma, Ph.D., FPFA, FICD discuss rumours about oral hygiene — brushing twice versus thrice a day — and whether oral hygiene should be taught in schools as well as in the home.
So, if you are looking for some reassurance that simple habits can be the most effective, or wanting to learn about the potential for oral hygiene to affect the rest of the body, this episode is for you.

Walking and jogging are often promoted as effective entry-level exercises for long-term health, but did you know that the key to strengthening muscle function may lie in anaerobic exercise? This week on Aging Less: The Longevity Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella interviews exercise scientist Associate Professor Justin Keogh.
Also a behavioral researcher, Associate Professor Justin Keogh is the Associate Dean of Research and the Head of Exercise and Sports Science at Bond University. His research focuses on better understanding the relationship between muscle mass, strength and physical performance in athletes as well as older adults at risk of disability and poor health outcomes. Impressively, to better translate his research evidence, he uses a variety of qualitative approaches to better understand the determinants of physical activity and exercise in a variety of older adult groups.
In this episode, Associate Professor Justin Keogh sheds light on what anaerobic training is, distinguishing it from the more well-known high-intensity interval training (HIIT). He reveals that musculoskeletal issues are a popular concern amongst the aging population, which can be addressed through early interventions of anaerobic training, as opposed to walking or jogging, which are more commonly promoted in public health.
Together, Marie and Associate Professor Justin Keogh canvass the common struggles that people face when attempting to incorporate anaerobic exercise into their routines, and discuss the various ways to manage them. So, whether you’re a fitness enthusiast or simply interested in maintaining your vitality as you age, tune in to this episode for valuable evidence-based insights on anaerobic training!

Ever wondered why you feel energized throughout the day, only to feel sleepy at night? The answer lies within your circadian rhythm, an internal clock that regulates your sleep-wake cycle. This week on Aging Less: The Longevity Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella is joined by circadian physiologist Dr. Jamie Zeitzer to learn more about the enormous impact of light on our circadian rhythm, and what it does to our health.
Specializing in how light impacts circadian rhythms, Dr. Jamie Zeitzer is the co-director of the Center for Sleep and Circadian Sciences at Stanford University, where he is also an associate research professor of psychiatry and sleep medicine. Having published numerous studies on sleep, insomnia, circadian science, Dr. Jamie Zeitzer discovered a pioneering treatment for jet lag, and had contributed to publications by the likes of The New York Times and The Washington Post.
In this episode, Dr. Jamie Zeitzer reveals that studies have shown that the more stable your internal clock is, the less likely you are to get cancer or diabetes. He elaborates that, with this in mind, night shift workers tend to have a poorly functioning circadian rhythm, leading to a higher risk of health issues across the board.
Together, Marie and Dr. Jamie Zeitzer discuss useful habits and practices for regulating the circadian rhythm, such as getting as much light as possible during the day. So, tune in this week to learn the secrets behind developing a sharper mind, for a longer, healthier life!
